On blogging, when working

Ed’s comment on my last post made me read Gabor’s blog earlier, which I had not done for a while. As always, I was amazed by the great, detailed posts on interesting subjects of all sorts. And, as always when I read great blogs, I mused on how much easier it is to be a blogger when you are not affiliated with a high profile company. Especially if you work in a “strategic” management position, and totally super especially if the company you work for is Google.

Many times over the last few months I have found myself in a position where I wanted to write about something, an event, a new product, the mobile industry, an innovation, that I thought was worth talking about. Yet, I almost always ended up discarding my thoughts without posting them. I am always worried that anything I write that is remotelty related to my job will be interpreted by somebody as a glimpse into what I am working on at Google. And that my opinion on any subject will be misunderstood as an indication of what Google thinks on the matter as well.

This may be totally exagerated paranoia on my side. After all, not many people read this blog. Yet, the majority of them probably work for Yahoo!. So I end up writing pretty much exclusively about personal stuff, my family etc. And while this is somewhat interesting for my close friends, it does not make great reading for the general public, I assume.
So, NOTE TO SELF: make a concentrated effort to write again about more work related subjects!
