Gmail for Mobile saves the day

Mike Rowehl of Admob has a great story about how the Gmail for Mobile Java client saves him on his current trip to India. It is nice to know that we can make a difference to some people’s lives.

Definitely!! GMail is a fantastic app, the Java version in particular is one I find myself pointing to more and more. Not just a quality implementation, but a fantastic example of online/mobile integration. Thanks!

So here’s the thing - I *did* have the app installed, and it was *amazing* and then for reasons too tedious to go into now I had to reset my Nokia N73 and now I can’t reinstall the app. It times out at 154 k and tells me it’s an invalid jar file. You seen that before?

Hm… an operator branded handset, I assume? Go to Menu>Settings>Software Installation. Make sure that is set to “All”. If it was set to “Signed Only”, then there was your problem.

Any plans to sync google calendar with a mobile phone?

So is an update for Gmail for Mobile to allow Google Apps addresses (not for Blackberry, mind you*, but for ANY J2ME device), coming anytime soon? It’s getting frustrating considering that I have a couple Google Apps addresses including one with an employer that happens to be paid-for (Premier Edition). Surely a paid service could make use of something that a free service can, too?

(* I know that the Blackberry app is really just a COD-compiled version of the J2ME app, which leads me to believe that the lack of support for other J2ME devices is because of a business contract with RIM. If this is true, please say so, so that we don’t just keep asking for something that is contractually forbidden. If it works on the Blackberry, it should have been possible to make it work on other J2ME devices many months ago with no or almost no effort.)

You can now get Gmail for Mobile also with support for Google Apps accounts. Download it from http://m.mobile.com/a to your phone.
